Jane Goodall at the Mic: Never Stop Wondering

Hello there, children. My name is Jane Goodall. I was born in 1934 in London, England. Ever since I was a little girl, I loved animals. While other children played with toys, I spent hours watching birds, insects, and my family's dog. I wanted to understand how animals lived and why they behaved the way they did.

One day, when I was just five years old, I disappeared for several hours. My family searched everywhere for me! When they finally found me, I was quietly sitting in a chicken coop. I wasn't lost at all—I was patiently waiting to see how a hen laid an egg. I wanted to discover the answer for myself instead of simply asking someone else.

As I grew older, I dreamed of traveling to Africa. It seemed like an impossible dream because my family didn't have a lot of money, and very few women became scientists at that time. But I refused to give up. I worked hard, saved every penny I could, and eventually my dream came true.

In Tanzania, I began studying wild chimpanzees in a place called Gombe National Park. At first, the chimpanzees ran away whenever they saw me. So I sat quietly every day, watching from a distance. Slowly, they began to trust me.

Then I made an amazing discovery. I watched a chimpanzee pick up a twig, remove its leaves, and use it to pull termites out of a mound for food. Until then, many people believed that only humans could make and use tools. My discovery changed the way scientists understood animals forever.

The more time I spent with the chimpanzees, the more I realized they were much like us. They played with one another, cared for their babies, solved problems, and even comforted friends when they were sad. They had unique personalities, just like people.

As the years passed, I realized that protecting animals also meant protecting their forests. If the forests disappeared, the chimpanzees would lose their homes. I began speaking around the world, encouraging people to care for nature and all living things.

I also started a program called Roots & Shoots, where young people work together to help animals, people, and the environment. I have always believed that children can make a real difference, no matter how old they are.

Looking back, I learned that big discoveries often begin with something very small like asking a question, paying attention, and never giving up. You don't always need the loudest voice to change the world. Sometimes patience, kindness, and curiosity are the greatest strengths of all. Be kind to people, animals, and the planet we all share.

Max’s Museum Wonders: The Call that Stopped the Food Court

The museum was unusually quiet after school. Grandpa Leo was restoring an old jukebox in another room, leaving Max free to wander wherever his curiosity took him.

He drifted into the Technology Gallery, where inventions that once seemed futuristic now looked wonderfully old-fashioned. There were pagers, cassette players, fax machines, and bulky desktop computers.

Then one display made him stop. Inside the glass case sat a giant gray cell phone with a long antenna. The label read: Motorola DynaTAC 8000X – First Commercial Cell Phone – 1983

Max laughed. "That's not a phone...that's a walkie-talkie that ate too many hamburgers."

He leaned closer. Suddenly, the phone rang so loudly it echoed through the gallery.

Curious, he reached toward the glass. The antenna crackled with blue sparks. The keypad glowed.

Without thinking, Max pressed the flashing green button.

"Hello?" Max said reluctantly. A cheerful voice answered. "Meet me at the food court!"

The phone buzzed violently.

A wave of electric blue light burst from the antenna and wrapped around Max. Everything spun.

Max landed beside a giant indoor fountain. Water splashed into shiny pools surrounded by dozens of potted palm trees.

He looked up. A huge banner stretched across the ceiling. WELCOME TO WESTRIDGE MALL

People hurried in every direction carrying colorful shopping bags from stores like RadioShack, Waldenbooks, Orange Julius, and KB Toys.

The smell of cinnamon rolls, pizza, popcorn, and soft pretzels filled the air.

"This place is awesome," Max whispered.

He followed the crowd toward the bustling food court. Families filled nearly every table. Teenagers laughed over baskets of fries. Someone dropped quarters into an arcade game nearby.

A man in a business suit walked confidently through the food court with something enormous pressed against his ear. It was the giant Motorola cell phone.

People stopped eating. People stared.

A little boy tugged on his mom's sleeve. "Mom...that man has a telephone!"

“What kind of phone is that?” the young mom asked the man.

The businessman smiled proudly. "Oh, this?" he said loudly. "It's my cell phone."

The entire food court seemed to stare.

One teenager whispered, "You can make calls without a cord?"

The man nodded. "Anywhere!"

He raised the antenna dramatically. "I'm talking to my office right now."

Several people applauded.

One elderly woman leaned toward her husband. "I remember when phones stayed in the kitchen."

The businessman paced proudly between the tables.

"Yes, Bob...I'm calling from the mall." He paused. "No, I am not calling from a pay phone,” he said. “No...my own phone."

He grinned as more people watched.

Then he added loudly enough for everyone to hear,

"Technology is the future!"

Just then, his phone let out a loud sound. He frowned. Another beep. Then another.

A teenager at the next table smiled. "Battery dying?"

The businessman chuckled nervously.

"Impossible,” the man said. His big screen flashed and beeped.

The man looked embarrassed. "They didn't exactly perfect these yet,” he reasoned.

Everyone laughed, even Max.

The man sighed. "I suppose I should've used the pay phone."

Suddenly, the phone crackled. Its antenna sparked. The giant battery pack buzzed louder and louder. The businessman stared at it.

A bright flash exploded from the antenna.

Napkins fluttered. Shopping bags lifted into the air. The fountain sprayed higher than ever.

Max felt the strange energy wrap around him again. "Oh...here we go..."

WHOOSH!

Max landed safely back on the museum floor. The Motorola phone rested silently behind its glass case.

Everything looked exactly as it had before.

Max reached into his pocket. Inside was a bright orange food court token.

Grandpa Leo walked into the room. "Find anything interesting?"

Max grinned. "You could say that."

As Max slipped the token into his pocket, he couldn't help wondering what forgotten treasure in the museum would send him on his next adventure.
